First Ever Training Program on " Trans - Disciplinary Research Methodology"

Venue: IAIM campus, Bangalore
Date: 15th to 28th Feb, 2010

Details:

The Institute of Ayurveda and Integrative Medicine (IAIM-FRLHT) organized the first ever training program in Trans-Disciplinary Research Methodology for doctoral students of a unique international initiative of organization called ETC-COMPAS called CAPTURED, which expands as Capacity and Theory Building of Universities and Research centers in Endogenous Development of which IAIM-FRLHT is the India partner. This initiative aims to promote better understanding and acceptance of traditional knowledge systems of the world in mainstream educational institutes by supporting doctoral programs in these institutions on topics drawn from Traditional Knowledge Systems.

This 14 day workshop hosted at IAIM campus, Bangalore from 15 to 28 February 2010 exposed the students coming from three different continents viz Ghana in Africa, Bolivia in South America and India-Sri lanka from Asia to methodologies, principles and challenges of doing research in Traditional Knowledge Systems like Ayurveda or African Medicine in a contemporary manner. It involved a field trip to a traditional healer, an organic farm and a traditional dairy farm near Shimoga in Karnataka. The workshop dealt with giving the students a better understanding of the concept of Endogenous Development, a term used to represent the acceptance and use of the traditional knowledge in the community for solving problems of the community through active participation of the community.

The workshop stressed on the need to recognize the existence and value of different forms of knowledge in the community apart from that which is taught in conventional institutes of education. It is important to nurture these knowledge streams alongside the mainstream and allow them to evolve to their fullest extent. The workshop discussed a model called “Co-evolution of Sciences” for this purpose. The faculty for this work shop included experts from Ghana, Bolivia, Netherlands, Switzerland and India.
